This summer, Pittsburgh meets Brooklyn in a powerful new group exhibition and artist Jason Sauer is representing the Steel City with signature grit and beauty.
“Brooklyn X Pittsburgh: The Industry of Art”, curated by the renowned Eric Shiner, opens Saturday, July 19 at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) and runs through August 24, 2025. Situated at 481 Van Brunt St in Red Hook, BWAC is a massive industrial art space that echoes the very themes of this show: production, transformation, and place-based creativity.
Sauer will exhibit a hanging wall sculpture from his “Peace After Destruction” series, a body of work that turns the aftermath of demolition derbies into reflections on resilience. Known for painting cars, wrecking them in derbies, and repurposing the remains into sculpture, Sauer brings the material weight of industry into dialogue with healing and artistic expression.
This exhibition explores the shared industrial and creative DNA of Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, two cities that have long powered the country’s physical and cultural infrastructure. As Eric Shiner (former director of The Andy Warhol Museum and current President of Powerhouse Arts) puts it, these regions are “prolific centers of art production” with intertwined histories of making, from steel beams to bold ideas.
For Sauer, who operates out of Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood and co-founded Most Wanted Fine Art, this is more than an art show, it’s a homecoming and a handshake between two communities of makers.
